An Australian man died after falling down a ravine on the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu in Peru, local authorities confirmed. Matthew Cameron Paton, 53, was found Thursday by the High Mountain Rescue Unit in Cusco, approximately 300 meters (984 feet) down a steep slope near the "50 Gradas" section of the trail.
Paton, who had arrived in Cusco about 12 days prior with his wife, was reported missing Wednesday. Police said he fell through a broken railing while hiking with a tour group and guide. Peruvian news outlet Andina quoted Cusco Police Region Chief General Virgilio Velasquez saying Paton reportedly tripped on a wooden bridge, grabbed a railing, and fell when it gave way.
Investigation Underway
Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the fall. Paton's body is slated for transfer to a nearby town. The Police Association of Victoria (TPAV) expressed shock and sadness over the loss of their member in a "tragic accident overseas."
A spokesperson for Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade stated consular assistance is being provided to the family. They extended condolences during this difficult time.
